Recreation & Culture

Recreation in northern Alberta is often focused on the outdoors. There are vast areas of crown (public) lands freely available for recreational purposes. Some of the crown lands are reserved for parks, which charge a small fee for overnight camping.

Visitors and residents can participate in sports such as canoeing, kayaking, power boating, quading, snowmobiling and cross country skiing in winter. Other sports such as golfing, soccer, volleyball, basketball, baseball, hockey, hunting (shooting), fishing, snowboarding and curling are also common. Most people who visit are surprised at how available and inexpensive these sports can be. For example, golf courses can nearly always accommodate players, and at bargain fees.

The Peace Country has a thriving cultural industry. This includes several performing arts troupes, numerous art galleries, dance studios, adult education classes, arts festival and libraries.
The Prairie Art Gallery at 103-9839-103 Avenue, Grande Prairie is the most important gallery in the Peace Country. It has an excellent collection of iconic northern art. This is a "must-see" for anyone interested in the North, and its artistic interpretation. The website address is: http://prairiegallery.com/.

Another important gallery is the Beaverlodge Gallery, home to some of the most talented regional artists. The Beaverlodge Gallery also provides classes. Their website is http://www.beaverlodgegallery.com/

Those interested in quilting may consider the Piecemakers Quilt Guild. Call 780-402-3090.

Libraries can be located in even the smallest Peace Country community. These libraries are part of the Peace Library system, which provides a large inventory of books. Anyone needing a book that is not on the shelves of their local library can request a copy be delivered to that library.
