Population Pyramids

A population pyramid is a horizontal bar graph that illustrates the age distribution of a population. It typically shows the number of males on the left side by age grouping and of females on the right by the identical age grouping.

Visit the Statistics Canada webpage:

This page illustrates the population pyramids for Canada and Alberta based on the 2006 census.
Not unexpectedly, the population pyramid shows few people of advanced age, because many of them have succumbed to age-related mortality. But note all the people in their 40s and 50s. These are the generation of people born after the Second World War when Canada (and some other countries) experienced a "Baby Boom". There is another bulge in the population in their late teens and early 20s. These are the children of the Baby Boomers.

Note too, that Alberta has fewer older people and more younger people than the rest of Canada. We find that Alberta is attractive to new comers, who are mostly early in their working careers. Thus, many young adults move to Alberta for good-paying jobs. Indeed, Alberta's population has a greater percentage of young adults than any other province.
The point is that Alberta is Canada's youngest province, and the Peace Country is perhaps the youngest region in Alberta. Indeed, the region is a magnet for those wanting to find a job and launch a career. Note too, that in the Peace Country both sexes are in balance. Thus, there are about as many men as women in the Peace Country.
