The key strengths of the Peace Country are a positive business climate that encourages investment, growth and progress, and an abundance of natural resources.
Exploration, Production and Servicing of Convention and Unconventional Oil & Gas
An abundance of established and potential energy reserves which fuel a thriving oil & gas industry. This includes the Peace River Oil Sands reserves, the third largest in Alberta.
Water Resources
An abundant supply of water makes Peace Country ideal for water intensive industries. The Peace River is one of Canada’s great rivers, with a length of 1,923 kilometers and an average discharge of 2,110 cubic meters per second. As of 2008, less than 0.4 per cent of the natural supply of the Peace River was allocated for use. Water allocations in Alberta are managed. The overall management policy is described in the document Water for Life Strategy.

Substantial forest reserves and a forest industry that includes pulp mills; saw mills; oriented strand board (OSB) manufacturing and a number of value-added products.
Fertile and productive farmland that produces among other products, 20% of Alberta’s canola, 70% of Alberta’s forage seed and 21% of Alberta’s honey.
Acreages and farms can be purchased in the Peace Country. Farmland is divided into “sections”, which measure 1 mile by 1 mile (1.6 km x 1.6 km). Sections are further subdivided into “quarter sections”, which measure ½ mile by ½ mile. A quarter section of land is nominally 160 acres (approximately 64.75 hectares). Prices for a quarter section of farm land typically vary between $65,000 and $110,000, depending on location, soil quality, the amount of land cleared of trees and other factors. Acreages are subdivided quarter sections of land. Acreage lots vary in size depending on the developer, but are usually in the range of 0.5 to 4 hectares (1 to 10 acres).
Cultural Industries Coalition in the Peace Country
PREDA is supporting an initiative to advance cultural activities like music, art and video as business and career opportunities in the region. The initiative, recognized as one of the region’s new growth opportunities, is led by the Cultural Industries Coalition. Its mission is to provide area individuals, groups, organizations and businesses involved in cultural industries with support by profiling regional culture to the world and living the art locally by building on the resources and talents we have here. The key strategic directions for the Coalition are:
