The Peace Country enjoys a continental climate with warm summers and cool winters. We do not have the extreme heat of tropical countries, nor the extreme cold of arctic regions.
Our four seasons let us enjoy a wide variety of activities throughout the year from golfing and soccer to skiing and snowmobiling.
During the summer, our temperatures are close to those of Oslo, Norway and Helsinki, Finland. For about 14 weeks of winter, the Peace Country is about 8° to 10° Celsius cooler than these Scandinavian capitals. However, the Peace Country enjoys many winter “Chinooks”. A Chinook is a warm wind blowing from the Pacific Ocean. It brings warm air and frequently raises temperatures to above freezing for several days. These warm periods make the winter seem relatively short, and provide plenty of opportunity for winter sports.
The Peace Country does not receive significant precipitation, except during the summer months when there is sufficient rain to produce some of the best quality agricultural crops in the world. The dry climate results in reduced humidity, which means that the summer heat and winter cold feel less severe than in places with more humidity.
A feature of living in the Peace Country is the long summer days due to our northerly latitude. On June 21st (summer solstice) the Peace Country enjoys 17 hours and 41 minutes of daylight. In fact, it is possible to read a newspaper outdoors at midnight during the solstice using natural light. During the summer months nature seems to possess boundless energy due to the long days. During the winter solstice on December 21st, the region enjoys almost seven hours of daylight.
